School of Dentistry (SOD) and Taipei Medical College (TMC) were founded at the same time in 1960. At the early stages, SOD prepared around 10 graduates each year while outsourcing their practice facilities in municipal and military hospitals.

It was not until 1970 when the number of graduates increased to around 40 the board of directors of TMC decided to establish the Dental Clinic Division (DCD). DCD was located temporarily on Sinyi Road, Taipei City, and started operations in Oct 1971. Once the TMCHospital has been set up on campus in Aug 1976, DCD got transferred to the hospital and started service. DCD functioned with its first 5 departments; Restorative Dentistry, Prosthodontics, Orthodontics, Oral Surgery, and Oral Medicine. Later in 1984 various research labs (RB), Maxilla & Mandible, Prosthodontics, Dental Materials, Oral Histological Pathology, and Bacteriology RB.were founded

In 1992, SOD founded Graduate Institute of Oral Rehabilitation (GIOR) and started its MS degree program under accreditation. SOD invested considerable educational research instruments in the program and many PhD alumni from Japan, US, and Europe came back to join the faculty. A research environment has fostered at SOD and its graduate programs. School of Oral Hygiene (SOH), Graduate Institute of Oral Science (GIOS) featuring biomedical and basic sciences research, and Graduate Institute of Biomedical Materials (GIBM) were established under SOD one by one. In 2000, TMC was upgraded to Taipei Medical University therefore SOD was advanced to College of Oral Medicine (COM) and Professor Lin Che-Tong being the first dean.

In 2002, following “the Holistic Policy for Faculty,” Professor Sean Lee was appointed by COM to act as the Dean of DOS and Dean of GIOS. The faculty composition is being restructured and improved to encourage promotions among professors. New blood has also been added in levels of assistant professor and up. This enhances the integration of clinical practice and basic sciences. In addition, the admission of PhD program to GIOS in Fall 2004 sets a milestone for COM. In the years to come, DS will launch new “DDS + PhD” and “MS + PhD” programs which will invite interested and promising students to directly pursue PhD degree and prepare them to be researchers with competencies. Currently COMTeachingBuilding is under construction and COM expects the nation's very first oral and dental education building that has the most advanced and the sophistication in equipments and instruments.

For the last 40 years at COM, though with limited resources, we have the infinite will and commitment to strive to be the best medical school. Our goal is nothing less than to improve the nature of dental and oral education and practice in order to best serve our students, our patients and our communities.
