Center for General Education

Center for Arts and Humanities
The Center for Arts and Humanities (CAH) at Taipei Medical University has been formally established in October, 2015 under the directorship of Professor Dominic Cheung (Chang Ts’o), an endowed chair professor at TMU and a senior faculty of the Dept. of Comparative Literature, and Dept. of East Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Southern California in the US. CAH has already begun a series of pedagogical programs that include formal classes for regularly enrolled students, lectures, and book publications. These pedagogical aspects will expand and be integrated with various lines of research and faculty recruitment over the next several years.

Courses are taught in the Center under various guises of symposia, General Education classes, and professional short-term workshops. The main objective is to elevate arts and humanities in promoting a higher level of wholistic human life and to integrate the quality as well as the value of life into the field of medical sciences. Renowned scholars and artists in the various field of arts and humanities were invited to lecture to TMU faculties, researchers, students and outside guests on music, paintings, gastrology, gender studies, visual and material culture, natural sciences and botanical illustrations.

The Center for General Education plays an important role in TMU's development toward a fully comprehensive university. It has the dual mission of promoting research and pedagogy in fields that are not yet covered by existing undergraduate departments or graduate institutes. At the current stage of development it also takes responsibility for arranging much of the first and second year undergraduate curriculum. The sense of "liberal" that we promote is that which was advocated by Bertrand Russell in his "Unpopular Essays," (1950): "The essence of the Liberal outlook lies not in what opinions are held, but in how they are held: instead of being held dogmatically, they are held tentatively, and with a consciousness that new evidence may at any moment lead to their abandonment."

Center for Foreign Language
The Taipei Medical University Language Center was established officially on September 1, 2014. Its mission is to enhance TMU student and faculty language proficiency, as well as their research and pedagogical capabilities. The Center currently offers foreign language courses, such as English, German, French and Japanese, as well as local language courses, such as the Southern Min and the Hakka dialects. Upon the request of a sufficient number of students, the Center is also prepared to offer courses in other languages. Because TMU is a research university that is undergoing a period of rapid expansion and internationalization, the Center is poised to play an ever more important role, especially as we develop toward becoming a comprehensive institution.
